Living in the Baltic Sea

Habitat
They live in small size schools in areas in richly vegetated and sandy bottoms.
Food
The Carp Bream generally feed at night and dig for larvae, worms, crustaceans and other small animals, which they suck in with their protractile mouth. They also eat water plants and plankton. Larger specimens may eat other fish.

Age: 3-6 years old

Number of eggs: 90 000 - 300 000

The Carp Bream is a slow grower and it can take up to 7-8 years before it reaches 1 kg. Some smaller individuals need to be much older before they are able to reproduce. The spawning takes place at night in shallow waters where the vegetation is rich. The males form territories in which the females lay their eggs on water plants. The fish larvae hatch after three to twelve days and attach themselves with special adhesive glands to water plants until their yolk is used up. At this stage the fish is still pelagic, but after a few months the fish take their typical body shape and become bottom dwellers.

Human impact and Status
The Bream is used for food, bait and animal food. It is fished both commercially and by sports fishermen. CLOSE
