Blue Mussel
Family Mytilidae

Description
The Blue Mussel is a marine bivalve mollusk with a hard smooth shell with fine radial gradial growth lines that houses a living soft boneless body. The two valves opens slightly with its hinge ligaments so the living mussel can filter water for nutrition. The foot has somewhat elastic “strings” called byssal threads that the mussel uses to attach itself to fix matter. The Baltic Sea Blue Mussel has a thinner shell and is much smaller than the Atlantic Blue Mussel.
Color
The shell is blackish purple, blue or sometimes brown in color. The inside of the shell is white mother of pearl and the living boneless soft body is beige, brown and yellow.
