Living in the Baltic Sea

Habitat
The Roach prefers waters that are vegetated and can be found in fresh or brackish water, they are found at 20 cm depths but prefers deeper waters. Life is spent in schools and in the cold season they migrate to deep waters where they form even larger and denser schools.
Food
Plankton, larvae, insects, worms, small crustaceans, moss and algae.

Spawning
Age: 2 years for the males and around 3 for the female.
Season: May-June
Number of eggs: 100 000

Spawning takes place in shallow still water and most often on sunny days, when the water temperature is above 10° C. They usually return to the same place each year. The 1 mm sticky eggs glued to the vegetation hatch after about 4-10 days.

Human impact and Status
Not a food fish. The Roach has a great tolerance for organic pollution, although they are very sensitive to pH levels under 5.5, below this point they are not able to reproduce. CLOSE
